43 Dollar Bill

Here are a few more features on the 43 dollar bill of Bush.

It's Raining!

Yay! I heard a clap of thunder a little while ago and now it's raining "cats and dogs".....hmmmm, where did that saying come from?? I found the following in a search:

"We do know that the phrase was in use in a modified form in 1653, when Richard Brome's comedy The City Wit or The Woman Wears the Breeches referred to stormy weather with the line:
"It shall raine... Dogs and Polecats".
Polecats aren't cats as such but the jump between them in linguistic rather than veterinary terms isn't large and it seems clear that Broome's version was essentially the same phrase. The first appearance of the currently used version is in Jonathan Swift’s A Complete Collection of Polite and Ingenious Conversation in 1738:
"I know Sir John will go, though he was sure it would rain cats and dogs".
The fact that Swift had alluded to the streets flowing with dead cats and dogs some years earlier and now used 'rain cats and dogs' explicitly is good evidence that poor sanitation was the source of the phrase as we now use it."

Who knows if this is the origin?

Yesterday, Prissy and I made a quick trip down to our hometown to put some flowers on our parents graves and our brother's grave. It was a very nice day for a drive and after walking around the cemetery we found our Great-Grandparents headstone and also their 3 infant children. At one time, the church was located right next to the cemetery but was moved into town years ago. It was interesting how many infants died probably from diphtheria. Sad.

After we were at the cemetery we decided to drive around the town that was devastated by a tornado back in 1998. They have really rebuilt since then and it looks great. While there, we stopped at the local restaurant and ate lunch. I noticed some rather unusual artwork on the walls and asked the waitress about them. Pictures are above. She said a local artist named Nick Schlief has done the artwork. I especially like the piece of art of Lincoln....it was made from different shades of shiny and dirty pennies (hey, now we know what we can do with our dirty pennies from poker). Very unique and beautiful. There was also a work of art of Beethoven and his symphonies were included around the face. Last, but not least, was a "43 dollar bill of Bush" which was rather interesting. I'll try and post some of the highlights of it....you can tell the artist wasn't too fond of Bush with the swastikas and calling him a dictator, etc. I guess that is free speech.
As we were walking out, I ran into an old high school classmate and we had a nice chat. Funny that neither of us recognized each other at first. It's been quite a few years!

On the way back to MG we stopped at St. Peter and did some antiqueing and I found a few more treasures that I "had" to have. I especially liked the Halloween noisemaker that I got for a steal. I'll post what I found soon.

Then, to top off the day when I got home, Barbra Streisand had a special on TV which I watched. She has such a beautiful voice. It was a very good day!
